More Powerful Engines for Lorries? An Exercise in Cost-Benefit Analysis

A study commissioned by the Ministry of transport suggests that a legal minimum power-to-weight ratio of 8 BHP per ton would produce approximately equal costs and benefits for vehicles under 30 tons gross weight; costs would exceed benefits for larger vehicles. Benefits would exceed costs for a minimum of 6 BHP per ton, and this is to be imposed.
